"is this bad?" aka the least useful question
I was working with a client and she listed off her breakfast and asked:
Is that bad?"
Here’s the thing, like I was saying yesterday, when you ask a question like this, you’re really not asking if eggs and oatmeal are bad.
The real question is:
I want to lose fat. Will these foods increase fat loss?
THAT’S the real question.
And to that, we can provide a more useful answer that will actually give us what we want, which is fat loss.
Food is simply atoms.
If you consume more atoms than are required for your system to operate (aka your body), the excess atoms will be stored for future use (aka body fat).
This isn’t mysterious. It’s physics. Take a look at the next few pictures:
This is the structure of human fat.
55 carbon atoms
104 hydrogen atoms
6 oxygen atoms
Guess what food is made of???
Oh snap! All your food is made of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen atoms!
Starting to make sense right?
And here is how the fat molecules leave your body. Primarily through breathing.
Oxygen gets taken in and carbon the fat molecules get broken into carbon dioxide and water and leave.
So to answer my clients question, it’s not a matter of is something good or bad.
It’s a matter of are you controlling the total amount of atoms you’re putting in your face?
Yes there are some nuances and complexities but unless you get this piece, those things won’t give you the results you want. They’re not practical.
And if you can control the amount of calories you’re eating and fill those with things that you enjoy, none of those things really matter.
Here’s one of my favorite clients who got rid of a ton of fat and kept it off.
Why? Because she understood these ideas and then installed them over a calm, relaxed demeanor. Aka operating with equanimity. Never getting too high, never getting too low.
Anyways, this stuff is easy.
We only make it hard because we can’t let go of our assumptions and operate with too much shame, guilt, and force.
A light touch does wonders.
Long live the Burrito Mafia.
